Dear Tulonga
When I first found out that you had autism, there is only one thing I wanted more than anything in this world. I wanted to hear your voice, even if it was just for a moment. I wanted to hear you talk. I just wanted to hear you say something. Anything! My only wish was to a have a conversation with you.
Then it happened, with the help of a special program, The Son-Rise Program® we found a way to communicate, you said your first meaningful words. Two to be exact. Two words became 20, then a hundred, I stopped counting at a thousand words. Surprisingly, you didn't stop there, I watched with joy, as your words became short sentences. We began to have short conversations, "in broken English" but I understood you and you understood me, most of the time. You stated your needs and wants without holding back. We even negotiated, it almost felt like a dream.
You didn't only make up silly jokes, you also began to use imaginary play. To put the icing on the cake you learned to read and write. And you my dear are kind enough to spell out words to me, whenever you realize I might not understand what you are trying to tell me.
The very thing I wanted was happening. I am so overjoyed that you have chosen language as your new form of communication.
I might want and desire more for you, like clear words & receptive language. I might set up goals. But I can never forget to appreciate all your accomplishments. I could never get caught up with future goals and accomplishments and forget to appreciate all you have achieved now. You are working hard to overcome your challenges.
Who knows, maybe one day you'll write back! I am so proud of you right now, appreciating our new form of communication, and appreciating you.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn the true meaning of patience and how to love unconditionally. You are the best teacher I know. Kind, Gentle, Loving, & Amazing Tulonga!
